Staying Healthy with Preventive Care

Preventive care means seeing a doctor before you feel sick. It helps catch problems early and keeps you feeling your best. This includes things like check-ups, vaccines, and screenings.

These visits are free with your health plan. Going to the doctor for regular care can help you stay healthy and avoid bigger problems later.

Preventive care helps you stay healthy

Getting a check-up every year and doing health tests at the right time can help you stay well. When you see your doctor regularly, they can tell you when to get tested to help catch problems early, like cancer or heart disease.

Preventive care for adults

Adults should get a check-up once a year. They can also get tests, flu shots, and vaccines to help prevent illness before it starts.

Here are some common tests adults may need, depending on age and health risks:

  • Heart health tests (blood pressure, cholesterol)

  • Cancer screenings (colon, lungs)

  • Sexual health check-ups

  • Diabetes tests

Talk to your doctor to learn which tests and preventive care are right for you.

Well Child Visits

Regular check-ups with your child's doctor are important for good health. These appointments are called a Well-Child visit or an Adolescent Well Care visit.

Every year at the well-child visit, the doctor may:

  • Review your child’s health history and check height, weight, and eyesight.

  • Check your child’s physical and emotional health.

  • Give routine vaccines.

  • Answer your questions, share advice for how to stay healthy, give options and resources for any health issues.

Kids and teens should see their doctor regularly, and their full benefits are covered until they are 21. Well-Child visits are free for Health Share members and most insurance plans.

Childhood Vaccines

Vaccines are an important part of the yearly, well-child exam. Vaccines protect babies, kids, teens, and entire communities from serious diseases.

Vaccines help

  • Young children build stronger immune systems (the body’s way of fighting germs)

  • Get kids ready to go start preschool and kindergarten

  • Prevent some cancers

To learn more about how vaccines work and how safe they are, visit Boost Oregon’s website here. They also have tips on how to calm your child, parent resources, and stories of other parents.
